12-year-old banned from Little League Tournament games over festive bat flip

A New Jersey Little League -team chances of going to Williamsport have taken a hit after one of their weak was suspended for a state tournament game because of a bat flip.

Marco Rocco, a 12-year-old for Haddonfield Little League, launched a two-run home drive last Wednesday against Harrison Township Little League and turned his bats in the air.

The Homer made it an 8-0 game in the sixth lap, which ended up being the final result. With the victory, Haddonfield Klodde section 4 titled and proceeded to the State Championship.

However, when he crossed the home plate, Rocco was pushed out due to a “security concern,” Rocco’s father, Joe, told NJ.COM.

“They wrote us a letter saying that there is a rule that says there is no horse gaming in the Little League, and they consider bats that flipped horse games,” Joe Rocco said. “Little League International promotes open bats tilting all over their social media accounts, their sites and broadcasts on TV to Little League World Series. It is openly promoted and encouraged.

“My son looks at it and emulated what he sees.”

A temporary restriction order was filed on Tuesday in the Gloucester County Chancery Division in the hope of letting Rocco play. But Little League International is “unwilling to compromise in any way” according to the father.

“He has played Little League all his life and his dream is to come to the World Series in Williamsport,” Joe Rocco added. “We are in the state final and are a few steps away. We are on our way there and now they tell him he can’t play.”

Haddonfield and Harrison Township also played each other both on July 13 and 15, split the first two competitions and made Wednesday a winner-take-all.

Haddonfield begins the state tournament on Thursday against Eldera, which came to the Little League World Series in 2019 in Deptford. The New Jersey tournament is a four-team, double elimination format.

Ridgewood and Jackson-Holbrook Little Leagues make up the other teams to advance to the state final. They defeated Williamsport and Nottingham small leagues to win their respective sections.

The winner of the bracket goes to Bristol, Connecticut, for a chance to represent the Metro region of the Little League World Series.
