14 dies as bomb ripper through gnp -rally

Quetta:

At least 14 people lost their lives, and 35 others were injured in a powerful explosion near a public rally by Balochistan National Party (GDP) in Quetta on Tuesday night.

The explosion took place close to Shahwani Stadium shortly after the end of a collection held to mark the fourth year of death for Sardar Attaullah Mengal. Health officials at Civil Hospital Quetta confirmed injuries.

Police officials said the explosion took place near the room shortly after the event was completed and the first reports suggested that it could have targeted the convoy from GDP chef Akhtar Mengal, who remained in safety.

Security forces quickly sealed the area, while rescue teams changed the wounded to hospitals where several were reported to be in critical condition.

GDP spokesman Sajid Tareen claimed that 13 party workers were killed in the attack, adding that the explosion was taking place, just as Akhtar Mengal’s vehicle passed. Investigators have begun studies of the nature of the explosion to determine if it was caused by an IED or a suicide bomber.

Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti condemned the attack and described it as an attempt to destabilize the province. He ordered officials to provide the best medical treatment to the wounded and ordered a thorough examination.

A special committee has been set up to submit a report on the incident while tightening security over Quetta after the explosion.
