New Delhi: At least 15 people were killed, and when many were injured in a stamp at the Central Station in India’s capital New Delhi on Saturday night, the main minister of the capital confirmed on Sunday.

The incident took place around 1 p.m. 20 (local time) on two platforms as passengers waited to board trains to Prayagraj City, where the Hindu Maha Kumbh festival hosts, says Media Reports.

The death toll included 10 women and three children, local media said. Media showed pictures and videos of crowds pouring over each other at the station after the incident when police and relief teams struck to facilitate the overload.

Delhis CM Atishi, which uses only one name, said of X that many of the victims were pilgrims to participate in Maha Kumbh.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and some other federal ministers confirmed the stamped incident in positions at X without revealing the death toll.

“Illegal of stamped at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones,” said Modi at X.

India’s Interior Minister Amit Shah said in a post of X that he had spoken to the rail minister and made status of the situation.

A study was ordered on the incident and four special trains were sent to evacuate the haste caused at the railway station, said Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at X, adding that the situation is now under control.

“The whole team works to help all those who have been affected by this tragic incident,” he said.

Dozens of people were killed in a stamp before dawn at Maha Kumbh in northern India last month, when tens of thousands of millions of Hindus were gathered to take a dip in holy river water on the most happy day at a six-week festival.

Delhis Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, one of the capital’s top officials, also visited the hospital to meet the wounded in Saturday’s incident, showed local media.

“This is a very tragic incident and we pray for those who have lost their lives,” said Atishi.

India has witnessed several rail accidents in the last two years, including a collision in 2023 that killed at least 288 people.

Indian Railways is the fourth largest train network in the world and is undergoing upgrading of $ 30 billion as part of Modi’s push to increase the connection.
