4 Nations Face-Off: Mike Eruzione takes ice in Johnny Gaudreau US jersey

Boston’s TD Garden was the place to be Thursday night, and an explosion from the past got 4 nation’s last audience even more interconnected than it already was.

The United States and Canadian hockey teams are back on the ice for 4 Nations Face-off Championship, five days after three games in the first nine seconds took place in their first match in the best-to-best format since 2016.

The two teams were the top point-gettes in round-robin games (Canada owned tiebreaker over Sweden) and meet again in Boston.

Before the game, two greatnesses of the sport were celebrated. Wayne Gretzky and Mike Eruzione served as honorary maps for their respective countries.

Eruzione’s presence alone gets every American audience in progress as he was captain of the 1980 miracle on the ICE team. But he gave the crowd something extra to cheer over.

Eruzione came on the ice that rocked Jersey by Johnny Gaudreau, deceased NHL All-Star, who, along with his younger brother, was killed by an alleged drunk driver in August.

Gaudreau’s presence has been marked among this year’s 4 Nations Club, like a US Jersey with his name, and No. 13 has often been hung in the dressing room.

Unlike Saturday, there were no matches on Puck Drop. But similar to this competition, Canada came out to a 1-0 lead.
