The best streaming services are still making sure we have plenty to watch as we count down the days to the 2025 holiday season.
It has actually been another big week with new movies and series. In fact, the competition has been so fierce again that the last season of kid-friendly Star Wars TV shows Young Jedi Adventures and Amazon’s latest Spanish romance for young adults Tell me softly didn’t even make the list. That tells you all you need to know about the strength of this weekend’s line-up.
But I digress. Let’s not waste any more time diving into what’s worth streaming before Monday rolls around again. – Tom Power, senior entertainment reporter
Wake Up, Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (Netflix)
Look at
What says “it’s almost Christmas” like the family arguing about a whodunnit movie? I guarantee you won’t be able to guess the culprit Knives out 3aka Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.
If you’re a traditionalist when it comes to your crime stories, Knives out 3 is the story in the trilogy made for you. Even if you’re not, it’s arguably Benoit Blanc’s (Daniel Craig) most successful outing to date.
There are darker forces at play this time around – without giving too much away, it’s an Easter Sunday resurrection gone wrong. New priest Jud (Josh O’Connor) is our real standout character, while nosy church secretary Martha (Glenn Close) provides full pantomime levels of internal breakdown. Check my Knives out 3 review for more on why it’s the series’ best entry to date.
Many secrets are closely guarded… but can you guess what they are before you stream it on Netflix? – Jasmine Valentine, entertainment reporter
Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 (Disney+)
Look at
Our favorite demigod is back Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2. After a very successful first run and receiving a solid Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%, we now move on to the plot of Rick Riordan’s second book, also called ‘The Sea of Monsters’.
The Disney+ series is without a doubt the best adaptation we’ve ever had, and it’s been a treat to revisit a book series I enjoyed as a teenager years ago. This season, expect more monsters, even bigger stunts and some exciting newcomers.
The first two episodes are streaming now and are worth watching back to back. This has the potential to be better than season 1 and I’m already invested. – Lucy Buglass, Senior Entertainment Writer
F1: The Movie (Apple TV)
Look at
Last major Apple TV release of the year, F1: The movie has finally zoomed in on the tech giant’s streaming platform. And after garnering critical and commercial acclaim upon its initial theatrical release, it has taken pole position on my to-watch list this weekend.
The Apple and Warner Bros. venture stars Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a Formula 1 champion who also raced, who comes out of retirement to try and finally win the world championship. He ends his 30-year exile to also help his former team-mate’s ailing squad, which counts Damson Idris’ passionate up-and-comer Joshua Pearce among its talented roster.
An exciting sports drama that brings you as close to the action as humanly possible, the latest film from the film Top Gun: Maverick director Joe Kozinski is not only one of the best Apple TV movies of all time, but one of the best movies of 2025. Rush to your couch and stream it ASAP. – TP
Merv (Prime Video)
Look at
It’s not Christmas unless you’ve seen at least one heartwarming rom-com, so why not take a chance on this new Prime Video movie starring Zooey Deschanel and Charlie Cox?
Merv guaranteed to tug at your heartstrings because at the center of this feel-good tale is a no-nonsense rescue terrier named Gus who just wants his owners back together so life can return to normal. In an attempt to lift Gus’ spirits, his estranged owners take him on a getaway to Florida, but could the trip also end up mending their own broken hearts?
Dog movies have a habit of tearing our hearts out, but this is one of the most wholesome of the new Prime Video movies, making it ideal for anyone looking to root for this dog to get its tail wagging again. – Amelia Schwanke, senior entertainment editor
Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour | The End of an Era (Disney+)
Look at
Are you ready for it? You will be enchanted by new Taylor Swift docuseries The end of an era so much so that you’ll want to binge it forever and ever (sorry, I’ll stop now).
Not only do we get a completely new cut of Era’s Tour film that finally includes ‘The Tortured Poets Department’, but the six-part docu-series will finally tell us exactly how it all came together.
Think how Taylor found herself hiding in a mop truck to get her on stage, the surprise Travis Kelce appearance at Wembley Night 3, and how the woman keeps coming up with so many incredible Easter eggs. The life of a showgirl, this is for real (sorry, I couldn’t resist). – JV
Roofman (Paramount+)
Look at
A well-behaved convicted thief who escapes prison and hides in a Toys ‘R’ Us store for six months, only to fall in love with one of the sales associates, is not a story you come across every day.
It’s easy to see why director Derek Cianfrance was drawn to the true story of Jeffrey Manchester, which ultimately inspired him to make Roof man. The new Paramount+ film has all the makings of an exciting crime thriller with an intimate romance at its core, offering the deep character study the filmmaker is known for.
As we noted in our Roof man review, lead Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst bring the story vividly to life, their unwavering gaze communicating volumes without a single word. It’s an engaging watch that will likely surprise anyone unfamiliar with the true story. – AS
Wizkid: Long Live Lagos (HBO Max)
Described as “an intimate and heart-pounding documentary,” this HBO Max film follows Nigerian singer Wizkid’s journey to global stardom. Throughout its 90-minute running time, expect to see personal scenes, live shows and an exploration of his influence on cultural perceptions.
The film was directed by Karam Gill, who has made other documentaries focusing on musicians such as Marshmello and Lil Baby. Gill has also directed some of Marshmello’s music videos over the years.
If you’re a fan of Wizkid or eager to discover some new music this weekend, why not dive into it Wizkid: Long live Lagos? You might learn a thing or two along the way. – LB
