The Beauty (Hulu/Disney+)
Look at
After the 0% Rotten Tomatoes flop it was Everything is fairRyan Murphy is back to give us another chance The beauty – and I mean that quite literally. Two FBI agents (played by Evan Peters and Rebecca Hall) travel across Europe to solve the mysterious deaths of a group of supermodels.
None of them seem to know each other, but all have the same symptoms – a virus that burns alive from within and spontaneously explodes upon death. Oh, did I mention that viruses are sexually transmitted?
It’s as hilarious as it sounds, and it’s right after the first two episodes that came out this week (read my review of The Beauty for more on what to expect). I feel it is important to remember those wise words RuPaul’s Drag Race star Bianca Del Rio: “beauty fades, stupid is forever.” – Jasmine Valentine, entertainment reporter
Steal (Prime Video)
Look at
What would you do if you were working a mundane, average-paying finance job in the city’s banking district, only to find that when you arrived at the office, you were taken hostage by a terrifying squad of armed strangers? Unfortunately for Zara (Sophie Turner), it’s exactly her Monday morning in the new Prime Video drama, Steal.
The Amazon TV Original’s first episode is a master class in storytelling as Zara has some pretty nasty secrets on her. Fatherland and Line of Duty fans will also enjoy an Anna Maxwell Martin cameo, playing an MI5 agent in exactly the same way I’d imagine Julia would handle a national crisis.
Steal is easily one of the strongest thrillers we’re treated to this month – read my Steal review to find out why.. – JV
Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere (Hulu/Disney+)
Look at
Baby, we were born to ruuuuun… to Hulu and Disney+ this weekend for the streaming debut of this Bruce Springsteen biopic.
The bear‘s Jeremy Allen White embodies the legendary musician known as ‘The Boss’, with the film chronicling Springsteen’s personal and professional life while working on the seminal 1982 album ‘Nebraska’. Armed with strong performances from White and Jeremy Strong, it’s one that fans of the American rocker will enjoy immensely. Everyone else? Based on its mixed critical and general audience reception, probably not so much. – TP
Queer Eye Season 10 (Netflix)
Look at
Our fantastic five are returning to Netflix for one last time – and if I’m being completely honest, Queer Eye season 10 might just be worth watching for the off-screen drama. In fact, if you’ve been watching the press tour unfold recently, you’ll notice that Karamo is pulling out of all interviews at the last minute, fueling rumors of alleged behind-the-scenes disagreements.
But what do the actual episodes have in store for us? The gang takes on residents of Washington DC over the course of their final five episodes, “indulging and providing the tools to continue to grow even after the Fab Five cross back over the Beltway,” as Netflix puts it. Weave ready, I think. – JV
The Smashing Machine (HBO Max)
Look at
Dwayne Johnson may be known for playing a scorpion king and Hawaiian demigod, but it’s his transformative role as mixed martial arts and UFC champion Mark Kerr in Benny Safdies Smash Machine that turned heads in what ended up being a box office bomb for A-listers..
The former wrestler-turned-actor received his first ever Golden Globes nomination for his unrecognizable performance in the A24 biopic. Although neither he nor his co-star Emily Blunt took home a trophy, the nod alone marks a major shift in Johnson’s career.
Less blockbuster action and more hard-hitting emotional drama, this plays on the contrast between Kerr’s gentle off-screen demeanor and the brutality of the fight sequences, making it an ideal watch on HBO Max. – Amelia Schwanke, Senior Entertainment Editor
Drops of God Season 2 (Apple TV)
Look at
You’ll want to forget dry January people, because Apple TV’s hit wine drama is back, with even more vintage mysteries and family drama than its first season.
God’s drops season 2 only premiered with one episode, but the Apple TV Original wastes no time setting up a brand new mission to uncover where the world’s best wine is made. The challenge reunites renowned wine critic Alexandre Léger’s estranged daughter and former protégé for a final test of family legacy.
The result is a heady mix of psychological and generational drama with notes of armchair travel and intrigue, best enjoyed with an Apple TV subscription. – SEAM
Skyscraper Live (Netflix)
Look at
Tonight (January 23) at 5pm PT / 8pm ET, famed mountain climber Alex Honnold takes over Netflix with a live event that will see him attempt to climb the exterior of what was once the world’s tallest building, aka Taipei 101 in Taiwan.
In true Honnold fashion, he will tackle the 1,667-foot climb without ropes. As if the stakes weren’t high enough, the entire feat will be broadcast live around the world over two hours. Best known for scaling El Capitan in the documentary Free soloHonnold is one of the world’s most accomplished free climbers, but that won’t stop my palms from sweating. – AS
