The best Garmin watches are large health and fitness trackers that are able to monitor your sleep, training, improvement and daily life and offer some action insights. They are super popular, but they suffer from the same problems that most other fitness trackers do: a lack of context.
When you see a heart rate graph all day and compare it to your results over the past week, it doesn’t tell you much inside the graph’s contextless vacuum. It determines when you sleep, characterized by a lower heartbeat, and when you have exercised, generally characterized by a higher heartbeat (unless of course you are unusually fit).
However, sleep and activity do not tell the whole story. What causes a bad night’s sleep? What about the effects of caffeine, alcohol, tongue and light meals on your heartbeat? What about the blust of chronic illness or the effects of women’s cycles? Statistics without context are rarely useful and useful on an individual scale.
This is where Garmin’s new lifestyle logging feature comes in.
What is lifestyle logging?
Lifestyle logging is a new immediate recording feature added to the Garmin Connect app. Available through the Health Statistics tab, it allows you to create a list of useful tags ranging from ‘caffeine’, ‘alcohol’ and ‘heavy meal’ to ‘eye mask’, ‘stretch’ and ‘sauna’.
Once your tag list is created, lifestyle logging allows you to add tags to your day at relevant times. You can set Garmin Connect to ask you to add tags at certain times for consistency. For example, it can encourage you at. 8, so you remember to add tags to your evening behavior, like ‘Reading in the bed’ and mornings like ‘coffee’.
Which Garmin users get lifestyle logging?
All. You do not need a specific watch to use the lifestyle logging function as it is widely available in the Garmin Connect app. You just need a watch that is capable of measuring the heartbeat.
You don’t even need the AI-driven Garmin Connect+ Premium subscription: It is a feature available to users at each level. Just make sure you have updated Garmin Connect and you need to be able to find the feature under More> Health Statistics> Lifestyle Logging.
To set up and use lifestyle logging
When you have access to Garmin’s lifestyle logging via the path above, you will be asked to choose from a list of tags called “behavior”. You are just recommended to choose a few based on your lifestyle, but there seems to be no upper limit. You can also scroll to the bottom to Add a custom behavior.
You can also configure and turn off and turn off to log behavior by tapping the three dots in the right corner and tapping Reminders.
Navigate to the lifestyle lining tab during the day to log or edit behavior.
