The best standing desks have become popular in offices and homework areas that are promoted as a way to reduce the well -reported health risks associated with long hours of sitting.
Lawyers say alternating between sitting and standing can facilitate the load, improve the attitude and encourage movement during the day.
IN The sliced bread Podcast, TV -Station Greg Foot is investigating products that promise to make us healthier, happier and greener (are they really “the best since the sliced bread”?) And in a new episode available on BBC soundshave turned attention to standing desks.
A simple little gadget
In the episode, the foot of Professor of Active Living and Public Health at Loughborough University, Stacy Clemes and Dr. Chris McCarthy, clinical fellow and lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University’s School of Physiotherapy.
Sitting for eight or more hours a day is known to cause major health risks, which is one of the reasons why standing desks grow in popularity.
The podcast discussion covers the benefits of these desks and the importance of switching between standing and sitting (standing for too long at a time can load the lumbar spine and cause back complaints).
Stacy recommends a 50/50 division of sitting and standing, changes every 30 minutes and suggests setting an alarm or using an app on your computer to remind you to change position.
It is at this point McCarthy comes with its brilliant suggestion: “What I find that it is probably the most useful part of an assessment of the screen equipment where people actually make them buy a kitchen lesson … have it on the desk, so there is something that physically goes off to remind you to move.”
But why a timer? “If there is an app, I find I can ignore it, but if you have a colorful hours going off and annoying everyone, you will probably more likely use it,” he explains.
