- Sony WF-1000XM6 stained in FCC certification documents
- Can contain dsee ultimate audio upscaling, one first for earplugs
- Sony WH-1000XM6 and WF-1000XM5 just got software updates
Sony has released two important updates to its Sony WF-1000XM5 earplugs and Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones, and at the same time it seems to be preparing to launch its next Gen WF-1000XM6 earplugs.
The improvements come via firmware updates: 6.0.0 for XM5 ear plugs and 3.0.0 for the XM6 headphones. Both updates provide improved Bluetooth Le Audio, which is now supported in the digital assistant and main tracking features. It is also in XM6’s Find Hub, as noted by NotebookCheck.
Both headphones and earplugs receive support for Gemini Live and for sound sharing via fast pair plus the usual adjustments. The XM5 troops also get a find hub point that allows you to search for each earplane and to disable the hub without using the charging case.
While these upgrades are being rolled out, it looks like WF-1000XM6 earplugs may be rolling into shipping containers very soon.
Sony’s WF-1000XM6 earplugs: When are they expected and what upgrades are expected?
The Walkman blog has seen that the XM6 earrings are now certified by the US FCC, two and a little weeks after similar certification in China. As with this certification, Sony reveals as little information as possible, but the archiving confirms that the battery inside is a well-known 3.85V model and the antenna is similar to the WF-1000XM5 earplugs.
The test software is the same as for Sony Linkbuds, which is based on a Medatek system on a chip, and the last note may add some a little juicier to make the new Sony earlings worth waiting for.
According to a Tipster on the Walkman blog, the WF-1000XM6 may be the first Sony headphones to support DSEE ULTIMATE, thanks to the built-in AI engine on the latest Medatek chips.
DSEE is short for digital audio improvement engine, and its job is to sense audio files, making compressed bluetooth sound higher resolution; According to Sony, the ultimate version delivers “even greater advantages for CD quality (16 bit 44.1/48 kHz) lossless codec sound. Recovering acoustic subtleties and dynamic range provides a richer, more complete listening experience.”
The FCC archiving could indicate a fairly short wait for the official release: It has a confidentiality date in March 2026, but when the Walkman blog notes, Sony often launches products earlier than these dates: WF-1000XM5S FCC archiving had an expiry at the end of August but the ears launched the month before.
So it is possible that WF-1000XM6 could officially be revealed on or around CES in January 2026 and sent the following month-but it is also possible that they could still land on time for Christmas 2025.
We thought the Sony WF-1000XM5 was a bit of a failure-very good in general, but unusual for Sony, they were not the best in the class among the best earplugs for noise cancellation, even at the launch, nor for sound quality, they still came with a steep price rise. Here hopes that XM6 knobs can course correct.
