- Deloitte admits to using AI to produce a government report
- The Australian Government received a refund in apology
- It highlights the need for greater transparency around AI use
Deloitte has admitted to having used generative AI to produce a report for the Australian government without implementing adequate protection measures, landing the company in a whole burden of problems.
The report included false quotes, false footnotes and a composite court quote, including tabs, landing of Deloitte with a non-so-Initignificant voluntary punishment.
Deloitte has agreed to repay the final rate of its AU $ 440,000 agreement with the government’s Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR), where the agency fixed the errors.
Genai under fire
DEWR was forced to re -read the report, remove over a dozen false references, fix typing errors and rewrite some sections. Although the Agency claims the core messages remain unchanged, the previous “final” report clearly needed some major revisions.
False quotes from academics Lisa Burton Crawford and Björn Regnell were removed, as well as an excerpt from Amato VS Commonwealth case attributed to a person who does not actually exist.
The updated document now reveals the use of GPT-4O, and while the use of Genai itself is not a problem, this case highlights the need for transparency. This is from a consulting firm that advocates responsible AI.
“The updates are in no way made or affect the material content, findings and recommendations in the report,” the updated report now reads.
University of Sydney’s Dr. Christopher Rudge is credited to identify the use of Genai. “You cannot rely on the recommendations when the very foundation of the report is based on a defective, originally non-reveled and non-expert methodology,” he added (via Australian economic review).
Deloitte says “the case is resolved directly with the client,” according to Financial times. Techradar Pro has reached additional context.
