NCAA Division in the administrative committees voted for a proposal that paves the way for athletes to place efforts on professional sports.

The proposal must still receive approval from Division II and III before it can take effect. These panels are expected to vote on the case during their meetings later this month.

If the proposal gets the final approval, the change may take effect as early as November 1st. However, collegial athletes would continue to be prevented from playing in college sports.

“The administrative committee today was clear in its discussion that it remains concerned about the risks associated with all kinds of sports games, but ultimately voted to reduce restrictions on student athletes in this area to better adapt to their campus buddies,” said Illinoi’s athletic director and committee chairman Josh Whitman.

“This change allows NCAA, conferences and membership schools to focus on protecting the integrity of college games while encouraging healthy habits for student athletes who choose to participate in betting activities on professional sports.”

NCAA also prohibits sharing information about college competitions with bettors. The institution also does not allow advertising and sponsorships of NCAA championships in bets.

Despite the potential change, the committee emphasized that it does not support bets on sports, especially for student athletes.

“Division I -Members are actively working to deregulate NCAA rules where possible, and the division of the board remains focused on preserving rules that directly speak to justice in the university sports competition and the academic successes of college athletes,” said Virginia Tech President Tims. “While NCAA members do not encourage students athletes to engage in sports betting behavior of all kinds, the timing is right to modernize these rules by removing the ban on focusing on professional sports and focusing on injury reduction strategies for behavior that does not affect university sports directly.”

The change comes as NCAA enforcement caseloads involving sports betting violations have increased in recent years.
