ISLAMABAD:

China’s ambassador to Islamabad Jiang Zaidong has hailed Pakistan as China’s “iron-clad brother” and praised its “consistent and firm support” for the one-China principle, while announcing Beijing’s decision to formally establish October 25 as Taiwan’s Restoration Commemoration Day.

In a statement issued in Islamabad, Ambassador Jiang said the move – passed by the Standing Committee of the 14th National People’s Congress on October 24, 2025 – marked the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s return to China after Japan’s defeat in World War II.

He said Pakistan has “always upheld the authority of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758” and “strongly supported China’s position that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the People’s Republic of China”.

Jiang noted that the decision to establish the memorial day was made personally by President Xi Jinping and passed through strict legislative procedures that reflect “the aspirations of the Chinese people and the nation’s determination to protect sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

He said it also “demonstrates the steadfast determination of the Chinese Communist Party to fulfill its historic mission and achieve complete national reunification”.

The ambassador said that Taiwan’s restoration in 1945 was “an important result of the Chinese people’s war of resistance against Japanese aggression and a convincing proof of China’s reclamation of sovereignty over Taiwan”.

He pointed out that numerous streets, buildings and institutions in Taiwan bear the name “Restoration”, symbolizing a shared national memory among people across the Taiwan Strait.

Recalling the historical background, Jiang said that under the Cairo Declaration (1943) and the Potsdam Declaration (1945), the Allied Powers agreed that all territories Japan had taken from China, including Taiwan and the Penghu Islands, “should be returned to China”.

After Japan’s surrender, he noted, China officially resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Taiwan on October 25, 1945.
