- Fitbit users have more time to switch to Google accounts
- The new deadline is May 19 (pushed back from February 2)
- Switching is quick and straightforward via the Fitbit app
Not long after Google bought Fitbit in 2021, it became clear that Fitbit accounts would be swallowed up by Google accounts — but if you’re yet to switch, Google is giving you a little more time to get around.
According to the official support page (via The Verge), the lights will go out for Fitbit accounts on May 19, 2026: after that time, your Fitbit account will no longer work with Fitbit devices. The deadline to download your data is a little later, on July 15, 2026.
Earlier, Google had said that Fitbit accounts would stop working on February 2, which is Monday. That in itself was an expansion because the original plan was to have everyone migrated to Google Accounts sometime during 2025.
Google hasn’t said why the deadline has been extended, but presumably there are either technical challenges with it, or there are still a significant number of users who haven’t done this yet – and Google doesn’t want them to miss out.
How to switch
When you transfer your Fitbit account information to a Google Account of your choice, all your fitness data and stats will be transferred and the app will remain the same. Basically, you just change the email address you use to log in.
If you are not satisfied with Google having your health and fitness statistics, you can export the data from your Fitbit account and then request that your account be closed. All Fitbit accounts that have not been migrated by July 15th will be deleted by Google.
You can find full instructions for transferring your Fitbit account to a Google Account on the Google Support Hub. Essentially, you can do it from the Settings page of the Fitbit app for Android or iOS and just follow the on-screen instructions.
The process appears to be fairly painless, and there haven’t been widespread reports of users having trouble switching from Fitbit and Google. The move has certainly gone smoother than the Gemini for Home upgrade currently being rolled out.
