AFP reporters in kabul heard more explosions and gunfire on tuesday as afghan and pakistani troops continue their border fighting.

The blasts in the Afghan capital were heard along with anti-aircraft fire and gunfire from across the city, and came as the Afghan Defense Ministry said “fighting is still ongoing” against Pakistani forces.

An AFP journalist in Jalalabad city, between Kabul and the border, reported hearing explosions and various weapons being fired.

At the nearest border crossing, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Jalalabad, residents of Torkham said AFP the day-long fighting continued.

The neighbors have clashed along the border since Thursday, when Afghanistan launched a border offensive in response to Pakistani airstrikes.

The latest casualties include three children killed Monday in Kunar province, said Afghan deputy government spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat.

Islamabad said its airstrikes in February that triggered the escalation were targeting terrorists. Islamabad accuses Afghanistan of failing to act against terrorist groups that carry out attacks in Pakistan, which the Taliban government denies.

The border fighting has affected several Afghan provinces.

The latest clashes took place in southern Kandahar, the defense ministry said, as well as in neighboring Zabul, according to the province’s information department.

The violence in recent days is the worst since October fighting killed more than 70 people on both sides, with land borders between the neighbors largely closed since.
