Power consumers face an increase of Rs 1.6/unit

ISLAMABAD:

Electricity rates have been hiked by Rs 1.63 per unit across the country, including Karachi, which is served by K-Electric, a private power company.

According to a notification issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Wednesday, the hike was approved due to the monthly fuel adjustment for January.

Electricity consumers will be charged the extra amount on their electricity bills in March. The increase will also apply to K-Electric consumers. Lifeline consumers and charging stations for electric cars are, however, exempt from the increase.

Nepra had earlier reserved its decision after holding a hearing on the January fuel price revision and issued the announcement late on Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, the regulator also approved a separate hike of 35 paisa per entity under the quarterly adjustment mechanism. As a result of both adjustments, electricity tariffs for consumers are expected to rise further in the coming billing cycle.
