The new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Brendan Carr, has announced that he will establish a security council to protect against cyberattacks with a specific focus on “sustained and constant threat from foreign opponents, especially the Chinese Communist Party”, Financial Times Reports.
“These bad actors always investigate ways to break our networks, devices and technological ecosystem. It is more important than ever that FCC remains vigilant and protects Americans and American companies from these threats, ”Carr warned.
Chinese threat actors are targeting US infrastructure, including the US Treasury, forcing the Agency to declare a ‘major incident’. These attacks seek to disrupt an already turbulent political climate in the United States and weaken critical services.
Strategic competition
The Council will have a number of goals, including ensuring that the United States “wins strategic competition with China for critical technologies” such as AI, Satellites, 5G and Quantum Computing – as well as meals us vulnerabilities to national -state threat players and cyber spion days and reduces foreign supply chain dependence.
Bringing the communication regulator into FCC is part of the US government’s efforts to draw resources from a variety of agencies to tackle the growing threat of Cyber opponents.
Chinese hacking group Salt Typhoon is said to be part of the council’s focus early on, and as the notorious group behind the Treasury Hack as well as targeting universities and telecommunications networks (and more), this does not come as much of a surprise.
This sits together of the recent news that the United States is looking to put cyber -offensive operations against Russia – despite CISA’s confirmation that the defense against all cyber threats, “” including from Russia “will continue as normal.
