Google’s plans to fully pull its Google Assistant software in progress is underway after last week’s announcement that its AI-Aspired Google Gemini will replace Google Assistant in Android smartphones by the end of 2025. This news does not come as a big shock to us as Google has been appointed some of its Google Assistant tasks since October 2024, but we have come to learn that it is not just the best thing that Android is getting Geme.
In addition to smartphones, Google’s line is reviewing smart home assistants that include the best smart speakers and best smart screens, also through some changes, suggesting that they will also receive a Gemini face lifting. Since Gemini started SuperCharging Google Assistant on smart screens and speakers late last year, we could only guess that it would be a matter of time before this developed into a complete gemini takeover, and now it looks that way in the light of Google’s recent decision to disable certain Google Assistant features from its smart home units.
To make the ball roll with Google’s big transition, the company eradicates traces of Google Assistant Bit by to make way for its more advanced Gemini software, which we guess will be fully rolled out by the end of 2025 -at least to Android smartphones. It may take a little longer for the case with NEST devices, but now that Google has removed features such as live translation and family bells, it already has one leg up to make smart devices more gemini-friendly. This is not to say that Gemini wants less functionality than Google Assistant, it’s simply a coincidence that Google is slowly removing one to make room for the other.
Google photos capabilities
You will no longer be able to use voice commands to ask Google Assistant for favorite or share your photos or ask specific questions about when and where they were taken. When
Smart Display Ambient Screen Settings
To enable photo frame settings or surrounding screen settings on your Google Smart screen, refer to the Smart Display app to change these manually as Google Assistant no longer supports the voting command.
Live translations
Since Google Assistant introduced its useful Tolkt mode feature in 2019, users have been able to translate live conversations from one language to another. This is no longer the case after Google’s decision to ax it from the assistant’s functions, but it is still possible to translate unambiguous words or phrases.
Birthday reminders with routines
Routines are Google’s version of a personal task assistant who can automate tasks and actions by voice commands, such as turning off the lights, playing music or sending you messages about important birthdays in your calendar. Google has now disabled the latter, but you can still use the assistant voice control to set up reminders of upcoming birthdays.
Family Bell messages
Google’s Family Bell feature was useful for the whole family, so you can plan reminders or messages so everyone in your household would be in the loop with family events.
As part of Google’s transition to integrating Gemini with smart home devices, you can no longer use the assistant to create or read your previously scheduled messages. This was a favorite of Google Smart Home users, now routines are its alternative.
Daily updates
This is a basic feature, but a rather useful that Google has just completed. Just as you can set Alexa to give you daily updates, Assistant will no longer support voice requests like ‘Send me the weather every day’. Instead, manually plan updates when creating a custom routine.
Google Assistant about car accessories
Google has disabled the possibility of using assistant on car accessories that support Bluetooth connection or has an AUX connector.
