There are many developers all over the world today that create artificial intelligence (AI) agents who can autonomously do millions of useful things, such as Book Airline tickets, dispute credit card fees and even shopping crypto. A recent report from the Cloud Computing Company Pagerduty said that over half of the companies are already using autonomous AI agents, and 35% more plan within the next 24 months.
A few months ago, an almost autonomous AI called Truth Terminal made the news of becoming the first AI millionaire by promoting cryptocurrencies it was gifted. Although not fully autonomous yet, it is probably in later in the year that some AI agents that are not different from viruses will be able to independently wander on the Internet, causing significant change in the real world.
But what happens when these completely autonomous AIS starts to clone indefinitely? A January study by Fudan University in China has shown that this happened in an experiment with large language models, drawing some AI critics to say that a “red line” has been crossed. AIS autonomous replication is a precursor to AIS to be able to go junk.
As a transhumanist – someone who advocates the merging of technology and humans – I am all for AI and what it can do for humanity. But what happens when a human programmer intentionally and permanently pulls his access to control an AI bot or somehow loses this control? Even rudimentary AIs could potentially cause destruction, especially if they decide to indefinitely clone themselves.
In economic circles, in particular, a type of AI agent is increasingly discussed: Autonomous AIS designed solely to make money.
Entrepreneurs like myself are concerned that this particular AI could have enormous consequences for the financial world. Let’s examine a wild scenario that I call Ai Monetary Hegemonysomething that might already happen in 2025:
A fully autonomous AI agent is programmed to advance to the Internet and create cryptocurrency and then create cryptocurrencies and then infinitely create millions of similar versions of themselves who want to trade this crypto.
Now let’s assume that all these AIs are programmed to try to indefinitely increase the value of their crypto, something they achieve in similar ways people do by promotion and then deal with their cryptos for higher values. In addition, the autonomous AIS opens their crypto to be traded with people, creating a working market on blockchain for everyone.
This plan sounds advantageous to all parties, although people decry that AI created-crypto currencies are essentially only ponzi schemes. But they are not Ponzi schemes because there is an endless supply of AIS that always seems to buy and act more crypto.
It does not require a genius to realize that AIS infinitely replicates and acts as this could quickly gather far more digital wealth than all of humanity possesses.
This reminds me of something that my Oxford University professor Nick Bostrom once postulated: What if we programmed a learning AI to make paper clips of everything? If this AI was powerful enough and we couldn’t stop it, it would be ai -making paper clips of everything it got in touch with? Buildings, animals, even humans? Maybe it can. It can ruin the whole Earth.
The same problem could happen with endlessly repeating AIS designed to make money. They can find ways to make more money than is reasonably useful or understandable.
But enough of the philosophical. If programmers release autonomous AIS on the Internet that no one can control, what would probably happen? First, it is likely to be enormous inflationary. After all, if many trillion on trillion of dollars equity is added to the financial world (even just digital), this would be a natural result.
Another challenge would be ups and downs in AIS autonomous trade; Such an activity can be so important that human markets around the world are rising and falling with it.
On the positive side, some human entrepreneurs could become very wealthy, possibly trillionaries if they could somehow exploit the wealth of these AI. In addition, super -rich AIS could be a solution to the United States’ growing debt crisis and eliminating the need for countries like China to continue to buy our debt, so we can print dollars indefinitely. Could the United States actually start its own AI agents to create enough crypto wealth to buy its debt? Possibly.
This is actually a very important idea and helps to earn the reason why crypto was created in the first place: To help preserve the monetary value outside others controlled “even control of the dollar in the United States. After all, it is in everyone’s best interest that saves value, is not contingent on governments, banks, soldiers and even promises” all enter and institutions that may change or be corrupt.
AI can help create the fall of all national currencies as crypto proves more attractive than Fiat for both AI and human prosperity. Like Bitcoin, Crypto is really neutral and depends solely on blockchain and work on supply and demand. Nationalist impulses, like Dollaronopoly, could be wiped out as it is overwhelmed by Krypto’s functionality and security, spurred by trillion on trillion of wealthy AI agents.
But I go ahead of myself. In the short term, such as in 2025 and 2026, the greater risk is that the AI agents we create are trying to buy into our existing financial instruments, such as bonds and shares. With enough money, these bots can cause recession or inflationary destruction. It is certainly in the mind of government officials who do not currently allow AI bots to have traditional bank accounts yet. But it will not stop autonomous AI devices much in the much less regulated crypto markets.
Whatever happens, there is clearly an urgent need for the US government to tackle such potentials. Given that these AIS could begin to spread over the next few months, I suggest that Congress and Trump administration immediately call a task force to specifically tackle the possibility of an AI mone -host hegemony.
The real danger is that even with regulation, programmers will still be able to release autonomous AIS in nature, just as many illegal things are already happening online despite the existence of laws. Programmers may release these types of AIS for kicks, while others try to take advantage of it, and some can even do it, even as a form of terrorism to try to inhibit the world economy or spur to the crypto revolution to hamper the dollar.
Whatever the reason, the creation of autonomous AIs will soon be a reality in life. And vigilance and foresight are necessary as these new AIS begins to disturbance our financial future.
