Pakistani researchers have developed a new breed of chicken capable of laying more than 200 eggs annually, marking a major breakthrough for rural poultry breeding.

The new race, called Uni-Gold, was developed by researchers at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UK). It is designed to thrive in Pakistan’s rural environments and endure extreme temperatures, especially intense heat.

One of Uni-Gold’s most distinctive features is its ability to produce three times more eggs than a traditional Desi hen, despite having required significantly less feed. This makes it an attractive opportunity for small farmers seeking efficiency and sustainability.

According to impacts, the breed could be a game election for rural poultry breeding, which helps to meet both egg and meat requirements in underrated areas.

The university has announced plans to distribute the breed nationwide with the aim of increasing local egg production and strengthening rural areas.

Uni-Gold’s low maintenance also provides a viable opportunity for women in rural areas to generate income as it requires minimal resources and care
