Khanpur:
The water supply for irrigation from the Khanpur Dam has been suspended on Wednesday due to a significant decrease in water inflow.
According to sources at the dam, the current water level has fallen to 1928.79 feet, far below the full storage capacity of the dam on 1982 feet. The influx of water in the dam stands in just 26 CUSERCs, while the outflow is registered at 148 CUSERCs, creating an imbalance that has required immediate conservation measures.
Officials confirmed the suspension of the water supply, which is now in force for the past three days, is in accordance with established legal and operational protocols aimed at managing water resources during periods of low influx. The reduced influx is attributed to changing weather patterns and lack of rainfall in the drainage areas.
Despite the disturbance in the irrigation supply, the authorities have reassured the residents that the supply of drinking water to rawalpindi and Islamabad remains uninterrupted. Maintenance of water supply to the twin towns has been prioritized to meet domestic consumption needs. The dam administration closely monitors the situation and is expected to resume irrigation supply as the inflow conditions improve. Farmers who are dependent on the dam of irrigation are advised to adopt water conservation practices and explore alternative water sources during this temporary suspension.
Khanpur Dam, located on the Haro River near Khanpur in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, plays a critical role in supplying water for agriculture and domestic use in the region.
