In response, the WHO/Europe on Wednesday launched a new initiative-Pan-European Commission on Climate and Health (PECCH)-To tackle the growing threat climate change constitutes public health.
Chairman of former Icelandic Prime Minister Katrín Jakibsdótirr brings the Commission 11 leading experts from the entire region who are tasked with delivering recommendations to actions that are actions.
Deadly heat
With almost half of humanity already living in areas that are very susceptible to climate change, One -third of the world’s hot -related deaths occur in the European region.
In the years 2022 and 2023, more than 100,000 people combined in 35 countries in the European region due to heat.
“The climate crisis is not just an environmental emergency, it is a growing challenge for public health,” said Katrín Jakobsdóttir.
“We must recognize that the interaction between rising temperatures, air pollution and changing ecosystems due to human-induced climate change is already affecting health and well-being for societies around the European region and the world,” she said.
The Commission is tasked with making recommendations to reduce emissions, investing in adaptation strategies that protect health, reduce inequality and build up resistance.
