New research requirements Chatgpt dominates AI Chatbot referral traffic globally with a commander 79.8% share.
Tall from Statcounter says Openai’s platform leads in all G20 nations except China, where Deepseek has emerged as the unexpected front runner.
Despite Chatgpt’s widespread influence, it has struggled to intervene in China’s tightly regulated digital ecosystem, which now stands as a rare blind spot in its global push.
Deepseek Rules China – While Chatgpt takes the rest of the world
Chatgpt’s global influence is evident in its significant lead over competitors such as confusion (11.8%), Microsoft Copilot (5.2%) and Google Gemini (2%).
This dominance suggests that users are increasingly addressing AI -Chatbots not only for answers but like gateways to the wider web, which effectively reshapes the traffic model, which has long been dominated by traditional search engines.
“We are already moving into a new era from SEO (search engine optimization) to generative engine optimization (GEO),” said Aodhan Cullen, CEO of Statcounter.
This shift can pose a significant threat to traditional search models, especially to Google if AI-based search tools delay in referrals.
While Chatgpt continues to act as a leading driving force for traffic and undoubtedly the best SEO tool in most of the world, its inability to enter China reveals a clear limitation.
There Deepseek has a staggering 89.3% market share. Although globally only commands 0.8% of referrals, Deepseek has effectively capitalized on its domestic environment to exclude foreign competitors.
When it was launched, Deepseek received considerable attention and became the world’s most popular AI designation for a day.
It surpassed Chatgpt by becoming the most downloaded free app in the US and UK and recorded 12 million downloads in 2 days, even faster than Openai.
In China, it is an original alternative to Openai’s tools, partly because of its early overall Government’s AI policy and was banned or investigated by several nations.
Google, meanwhile, is in an awkward position. Despite having developed much of the basic AI technology, it is now afterwards with adoption and influence.
Cullen compares Google’s current match with “Traditional software providers at the site at the birth of Cloud Computing.”
There are now rumors of Apple that potentially introduce AI Search Functions in Safari, which would further intensify the pressure on Google’s search shop.
Statcounter’s findings are based on over $ 3.8 billion views over monthly pages, giving a real -time look at the changing balance of power.
Still, the image is not completely complete. GROK, another major chatbot, was excluded from the rankings due to its lack of reference to header referral, leaving a small blind spot in the wider market analysis.
