England finished the tenth tallest fourth-in-in-test history with a persecution of 371 that sealed a five-wicked victory over India on Headingley on Tuesday.
Under, AFP Sports look at the biggest goals chased down in 148 years of test cricket:
418 – West Indies V Australia, St John’s, 2003
After both teams made 240 in their first place, Australia made 417 in their second round and would have expected an attack with quick bowlers Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie and Brett Lee to quit the job. But hundreds from Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul changed the game before an unbroken partnership of 46 between Omari Banks and Vasbert Drake’s sealed a three-wicket victory.
414 – South Africa against Australia, Perth, 2008
Australia seemed to have put the game out over the reach of South Africa, but Protea’s captain Graeme Smith’s hundred and a century from AB de Villiers helped visitors to a dominant six-wicket success.
404 – Australia against England, Headingley, 1948
Still one of the most famous samples of them all, England captain Norman Yardley did not declare his side’s second round before the fifth morning. But Australia still scored 400 races during a day’s game, with the opener Arthur Morris, who made 182 and Don Bradman, widely considered Cricket’s biggest batsman, an undefeated 173 that sealed a seven-wicket triumph.
403-India against West Indies, Port-of-Spain, 1976
Alvin Kallicharran’s hundred built an impressive West Indies lead, but centuries from Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath took India to a total of 406-4. The match proved a turning point as his Spinner’s failure persuaded West Indies Captain Clive Lloyd to break with the convention by building an attack about four quick bowlers – a policy that helped his side dominate the test cricket for the next 15 years.
395 – The West Indies Against Bangladesh, Chattogram, 2021
West Indies Batsman Kyle Mayers enjoyed an astonishing start to his test career with an extraordinary 210 not out where he put on 216 with colleague debutant Nkrumah Bonner (86) to see visitors to a three-wicked victory.
388 – Sri Lanka against Zimbabwe, Colombo, 2017
Asela Gunaratne made a match-winning 80 did not put out and put 121 with Niroshan Dickwella (80) in the home’s total 391-6.
387 – India against England, Chennai, 2008
Two tons from Andrew Strauss put England on top, but Virender Sehwag made a Quickfire 83 before battling Great Sachin Tendulkar (103 not out) and Yuvraj Singh (85 did not go out) took India to a four-wicket victory.
378 – England against India, Edgbaston, 2022
Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow hit hundreds as England ran home with seven wickets in a serial final exposed from 2021 due to coronavirus -agreements within India Camp.
377 – Pakistan against Sri Lanka, Pallekelle, 2015
Pakistan was in serious alleys of 13-2 early in their hunting, but hundreds from Shan Masood and Younis Khan turned the tide before Misbah-Ul-Haq’s match-winning 59 saw them to 382-3.
371 – England against India, Headingley 2025
India made 471 after being sent in to beat by England’s captain Ben Stokes, but the hosts were only six races in the first laps.
England then dismissed India for 364, and the opener Ben Duckkett’s Superb 149 was the cornerstone of a hunt ended by Root and Jamie Smith.
This was only the third test with more than 350 races in all four laps, after Ashes clashes at Adelaide in 1921 and Headingley in 1948.
