A new YouTube subscription level could come faster than you think, as Google could move on with the relaunch of YouTube Premium Lite, a budget-friendly version of its YouTube premium level that lived for a short two years before they was axed by 2023. Tier is designed for those who want to use YouTube for ad -free video content rather than music, creating a new subscription level that separates YouTube prize and YouTube music Bundling.
According to Bloomberg ($/£) YouTube Premium Lite will be announced in the US, Australia, Germany and Thailand soon, but have been testing abroad for months as reported by The Verge. Since news broke out, said a spokesman for YouTube spokesman “As part of our commitment to give our users more choices and flexibility, we have tested a new YouTube-Premium offer with most videos that are advertising-free on several of Our markets ”. Currently, subscription prices are not set in stone, but a user on threads sent a screen (see below) of a potential price range for the US version of the level back in October – around the time youtube confirmed it was in testing.

It’s a no-brainer that YouTube Premium Lite will remove ads from videos, but from what has been said about its relaunch so far, it seems to be the only benefit it will bring to the table. Unlike the expensive YouTube-Premium level that includes practical new tricks and additional benefits, including offline-downsloads, background playback and full benefit of YouTube music, these features will not be part of the lower “Lite” level
As it says, users who subscribe to YouTube prize have full access to music streaming service youtube music, which allows you to stream music and podcasts and watch music videos without ads. As described by Bloomberg, YouTube Premium Lite is designed to ‘target viewers who primarily want to watch programs other than music videos’, therefore only music videos will still include ads. Although ads are not completely eradicated in the ‘Lite’ level, it is still enough to lure new customers who are currently dependent on music flow platforms that are not YouTube music.
A rescuing grace for non-yoTube music users
For many people like myself, we have resorted to the best music flow services such as Spotify, Apple Music and even Tidal to make the most of our listening experiences. I don’t know anyone who is close to me using YouTube prize for that matter, and the only thing I can determine it is because its bundling with YouTube music seems a little meaningless when using alternative services. This is why I think YouTube Premium Lite could give the long-lasting separation between video and music streaming.
YouTube prize has always been one of the services I have never seen the appeal. It’s only because I’m a loyal Spotify user and therefore have no reason to use YouTube music. After hearing the rumors that YouTube Premium Lite could be on the way, however, I am prepared to surrender.
