Smashing machine sounds like the title of a Wallace & Gromit Stop-motion comedy, but it will be a much more brutal experience than something Feathers McGraw could come up with. It is a biographical drama based on the UFC legend in real life Mark Kerr starring Dwayne Johnson.
Kerr himself is very excited: He shared the poster for his instagram and wrote that he is “in disbelief that this is real”. He is “so proud of the work that DJ has put into becoming the crushing machine. I have so much gratitude, humility and respect for any small detailed production uncovered.”
This is not the first time Kerr’s story is told on screen. There’s another movie about his career made back in 2022 – but while the trailer is available for stream (and embedded below), you can’t stream the movie, even if I will be amazed if one of the best streaming services doesn’t buy the rights when the new movie’s advertising starts picking up Steam.
What was the original crushing machine?
2002 film, The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerrwere criticized for his unreasonable portrayal of the brutality of some of Kerr’s previous battles and of Kerr’s struggle with addiction.
It is a hard watch and of course it is often very violent. And it sounds like it will have very little in common tonal with A24’s takeover of the same story.
While the new movie is not out yet, some sites are running stories based on early views – and one of them, Worldofreel.com, says it could be the weirdest movie from 2025. According to Jordan Ruimy, “Reviewed by what I’ve heard, there’s zero doubt in my minds that people are not ready for the movie type in the store”.
Ruimi describes it as “Gonzo film creation”, “Not Oscar-AGN at least” and “One of the weirdest films that A24 has ever produced.” Given that this is the study that gave us All everywhere at onceAt Midtmar and The lighthouse That’s all the claim.
The A24 film is released in theaters on October 3, 2025, and given Warner Bros. Discovery Deal With Indie -Power Center we can expect Smashing machine To stream at Max in the US after its ticket office.
