Abuse during and after birth persists globally that warns

Over the past decade, a growing evidence has highlighted the widespread effect of abuse and the need to place respectful care at the center of all maternal and newborn health strategies.

WHO’s Human Reproduction Program (HRP), and partners released a new compendium Wednesday with the aim of ending abuse and promoting respectful mothers and newborn care with the latest evidence and guidance on best practices.

From decision -making to clinical environment and community services, this compendium outlines actions to maintain women, newborns, parents, parents and families.

Wide range of abuse

Taking various forms, abuse during childbirth ranges from neglect and abuse to non-consensual medical procedures, with a previous WHO-Supported study that found it 40 percent of women in four countries had experienced some kind of abuse or discrimination during labor or childbirth.
