Adguard just became the latest VPN provider who added quantum-resistant encryption to its software.
Specifically, the ADGUARD VPN now integrates a combination of classic encryption methods with one of the post-quantum algorithic standards released by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) last August. The feature was rolled out on MacOS and Windows on March 6, 2025, when the mobile apps are expected to get upgrade later this month.
The company is now following in the footsteps of Google Chrome and some of the best VPN providers in the market by upgrading its encryption protection to ensure that user data is protected from new threats set by Quantum Computing.
The need for quantum -proof encryption
“We are on the verge of the quantum technology era, and data protection must remain in front of the threats, not only respond to them. By implementing cryptography after quantity, we lay the basis for a safe internet in the future,” said Denis Vyazovoy, Adguard VPN CPO.
Experts predict that it is just a matter of time before quantum computers break the current RSA-based encryption methods. This is mainly because these machines have the ability to process calculations that today’s computers cannot handle within minutes.
The latest releases like Google’s Willow Quantum Chip and Microsoft’s Majorana 1-Chip, explains Adguard, “pushing quantum calculation closer to solving complex problems in the real world.” This can be a portent of what the industry has long feared – that the current encryption will soon become obsolete.
Quantum computers are still some years away from becoming mainstream, but cyber criminals are believed to have already adopted “harvest now, decrypts later” attacks. These involve malicious actors who collect encrypted data and decrypt them when quantum machines are ready for the task.
It is precisely with this in mind that NIST experts released the first sets Identity approval (ML-DSA and SLH-DSA).
As mentioned earlier, the ADGUARD VPN has implemented a hybrid encryption method that includes the classic X25519 elliptical wicker algorithm with Post-Quantum Kyber768-based ML-Kem768.
This double -layer encryption method explains, the provider explains, “ensures robust protection against both current and future risks, enabling safe session keys that are resistant to quantum calculation progress.”
This is exactly what likes Google, Signal, Tuta Mail, ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Mullvad VPN, Windscribe and Purevpn have also done.
In short, having a hybrid encryption method ensures that tried and tested algorithms always protect your data, even if protection after the quantity fails.
If you use the latest version of the ADGUARD VPN on Desktop, you must already be able to activate this feature through the Settings menu. This advanced security option is also expected to land on iOS and Android VPN apps in the next few weeks.
