- Russian airline Aeroflot confirms the suffering of an IT event
- More than 40 flights were allegedly rooted after attack
- Silent Crow and Cyber Party’s taking both responsibility
Aeroflot, Russia’s largest airline, has suffered a cyberattack that disturbed its operations and grounded dozens of flights.
The news was confirmed by the airline as well as by the Kremlin itself – and also by two cyber criminal groups that assumed responsibility for the attack – Silent Crow and Cyber Party.
The former is a Ukrainian group, while the latter – Belarusian.
“War on all fronts”
In a telegram group, Silent Crow apparently said his “long -lasting and great operation” – “completely destroyed” the airline’s IT system. As a result, more than 40 flights were canceled, BBC Mostly reported domestic flights inside Russia, but also a few routes to Belarus and Armenia.
Cyber Party also confirmed to participate in the hack and noted, “We help Ukrainians in their fight with the occupation and performed a cyber attack on aeroflot and paralyzed the largest airline in Russia.”
Reliable information from Russia is difficult to come up with, but some media reports that the airline confirmed to have problems with its information system.
“We must not forget that the war against our country is waged on all fronts, including the digital,” BBC Quoted Anton Gorelkin, a Russian MP.
Since the war between Russia and Ukraine started in 2022, cyber criminals, hacktivists and state-sponsored hacking groups have been active more than usual, trade in the Internet, disturbed critical infrastructure organizations, spying on military, defense, government and IT organizations and stealing sensitive data.
Conti, who was a major ransomware operator at the time, publicly sitting with Russia and saying they would retaliate against all attacks on Russia in cyberspace. This twisted his affiliated companies, many of which were Ukrainian. Shortly after, an unidentified Hacker Conti’s chatlog files leaked indirectly resulting in the group’s dissolution.
In June 2024, a person was arrested in Ukraine on suspicion that they developed encrypters for Conti.
