Sony has admitted that its current live-service strategy “doesn’t quite go smoothly” after the catastrophic launch of ConcordBut says it will continue with its plan and learn from its mistakes.
During a recent Q&A session after the company’s latest financial results (via VGC), a call panel with leaders asked for an update on PlayStations Live-Service strategy in the midst of the delay of Marathon and after shutdown of Concord.
In response, Sony’s CFO Lin Tao said she still believes in live-service games, despite the recent negativity, which explains that other games like Helldivers 2 and Destiny 2 Has managed to produce a stable income stream that did not exist five years ago.
“Last year Concord [shut down]And this year Marathon was postponed, so some negative news has come out, ”Tao said (via an interpreter).
“But if we look at the last five years, five years ago live service games were almost non-existent for PlayStation Studios. We 1754584889 have Helldivers 2At Mlb show, and Gran Turismo 7and bungies Destiny 2So we have these four live services that contribute to sales and profits in a stable way. “
During the presentation, it was revealed that live service games accounted for 40% of software revenue for first party for 1st quarter and “For the whole year it is a little smaller, probably between 20-30%”.
“So in terms of the transformation, it is not quite smooth, but from a longer term perspective, if you look at the changes over five years, you see that a change has certainly occurred,” Tao added.
“Of course, we recognize that there are still many problems, so we should learn lessons from errors and make sure we introduce live service content where there is less waste and it is smoother.”
Concord Was closed only two weeks after launch due to poor sales and a low number of player.
At the time, wastage director Ryan Ellis said that Firewalk Studios explored opportunities had ceased the sale of Concordand offered a refund to all PS5 and PC players.
While this live-service game overwhelmingly underpinned, PlayStation’s Helldivers 2 was a massive success that sold 12 million copies in the first 12 weeks on sale. The game was so popular at the release that Arrowhead was forced to increase its contemporary player cap to 700,000 after it breeze over 450,000.
Developer Arrowhead Game Studios also recently announced that the Sony-Published game will be launched on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series on August 26, 2025.
