Lahore:

Lahore High Court (LHC) has instructed the lawyer General Punjab (AGP) to oversee the formulation and implementation of the Punjab Police’s social media policy, in the midst of increasing concern over the public humiliation of underfinsikring accused through online videos.

During the procedure on Thursday, Justice Ali Zia Bajwa AGP instructed to provide appropriate guidelines to the police department on social media behavior.

In addition, the Court ordered the additional Inspector General (AIG) by the police to issue strict protocols to provide media interviews warning that the concerned police superintendents (SPS) will be held responsible if any officials are violating these directives.

The directives come in the wake of several events in which police officers were found to make videos of individuals under-appointing-inclusive women-under attack, shaving suspected heads and uploaded such content on social media platforms.

Justice Bajwa questioned the long -term effect of such media trials and noted, “What would be the fate of the media attempt for a person if he is acquitted after two years?”

The court has sought a comprehensive report on the police department for social media before April 25.

LHC heard several despised petitions against police officers, including a case involving an attack on a dance party in Kasur, where police filmed and uploaded videos of arrested individuals, including women.

In another case, videos emerged showing suspects allegedly involved in the kite flight and air firing that had the head shaved by officers.

Despite a clear directive from LHC on December 13, 2023, which strictly prohibits the admission or public sharing of interviews or videos of individuals under insurance before litigation, violations are persistent.

During Thursday’s consultation, AIG presented an investigative report that confirmed that One Station House Officer (SHO) and two constables were found guilty of mismatch.

It was also revealed that Kasur (PSO) from District Police Officer (DPO) Kasur was the head behind the controversial Dance Party Raid.
