New atlassical research suggests that generative AI actually helps increase productivity among developers, saving two in three (68%) on average more than 10 hours a week and helping to improve code quality and build new features.
This increases from less than half (46%) last year, with Atlassian indicating that the time stored through AI is now reinvested to improve the code and build new features, resulting in a net win for businesses.
However, not all roses are because every strength meets with a straight and opposite strength – many developers report that AI actually costs them time.
AI in the large and all is advantageous for developers
According to the study, one in two developers reports losing 10+ hours a week due to inefficiency, such as searching for information, suggesting that artificial intelligence does not actually help improve productivity in some areas or for some roles. As many as 90% report losing 6 hours a week due to fragmented workflows and poor cooperation.
Difficulty finding information, a lack of clear direction from leaders and poor collaboration with other teams were highlighted as three of the greatest contributors to poor productivity.
“This pressure -cooked mix of innovation and load requires a closer look at how AI transforms the developer experience and what it means for the future of software development throughout the industry,” explained Atlassian CTO Rajev Rajan.
The report also revealed a clear interruption between AI-powered tools and the tools that workers actually need. Although most solutions accommodate coding, this is only an estimated 16% of a developer’s work week, with as much as 84% of the time boring on dull tasks.
Looking ahead, Atlassian calls for closer collaboration and communication between developers and leadership to identify friction points.
