So what emotionally devastating event is Season 2 building against? The Ghorman massacre, which is not only a huge central moment for many characters involved in the Rebel Alliance, but one whose canonicity has given rise to a tough debate among Star Wars fans for many years.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves yet. First, let’s explore how the last season of one of the best Disney+ shows is to lay the foundation of portraying this tomb in such a soulful way.
In Season 2’s opening episode, Ben Mendelsohn’s Orson Krennic, alias the Galactic Empire Commander, who oversees the creation of Death Star, invites a number of senior imperial officers to a secret meeting at Malthe Divide.
Krennic is informing the overall guests that no one outside this space emperor Palpatin and a few senior officers despite knowing what is being discussed at the collection. In fact, no notes should be taken, the officers’ personal droids will have their hard driving wiped out when the meeting is completed, said the meeting should not have been put in their calendars, etc.
With that household of the road, Krennic plays a video in infomercial style for his colleagues in Galactic Empire about planet Ghorman. This world is famous for the spiders who weave the best silk in the galaxy used to make the finest twill the most expensive clothing sold across the cosmos.
It is a strange mini-documentary to show to the overall guests, including the Imperial Security Bureau Commander Major Lio Partagaz and Dedra Meero. But hey, Krennic is nothing if not eccentric (he’s scary too, but we already knew it).
Either way, there is a reason why Krennic played this video and it has nothing to do with the spiders who inhabit Ghorman. The planet is also home to a particularly important material – deeply substrate foliated limite (DSFK) – which is apparently important for the Emperor’s Energy Initiative.
The public line is that DSFK will allow the galactic empire to create “stable, unlimited power” (Krennic’s words, not mine) that can be used throughout the galaxy, but it is only a front for the tyrannical regime’s true intentions. In fact, DFSK will actually be used to cover Death Star’s reactor lenses. This will allow Death Star’s crew to concentrate its planning -destroying beam to apply enough power to, well, destroy all planets and their inhabitants against the empire.

Empire’s problem is twice. For starters, the excavation of DSFK is an incredibly invasive procedure, so much so that it would destabilize the core of the planet and effectively destroy it. If the empire does not find an appropriate alternative to DSFK – it has three years to find a replacement, according to Krennic – it has no choice but to start “Gouge Mining” Ghorman for DSFK.
The second question is that the empire has suffered or no presence on Ghorman, so its sudden appearance would raise the eyebrows and potentially lead to a rebellion from its 800,000 plus inhabitants.
But the empire has a plan. By building an armory in Palmo, Ghorman’s capital, the autocratic regime is planning to distract Ghorman’s citizens by using it as a front for secret ferry in the machines needed to start digging for DSFK under their noses. With Dedra Meero, who also informs Krennic that he needs an empire-led rebellion on Ghorman to give Imperials an apology to start erecting the Armory, the Empire’s scheme will soon be fully operational.
Okay, so what does this have to do with the Ghorman massacre? Without spoiling too much, Ghorman’s population is not naive enough to just take the empire’s ‘We build an armory, honest!’ line to face value. With rebellion that pops up over the galaxy as the embryonic rebel alliance begins to fight against the dictatorial empire, it is only a matter of time before Ghorman’s own underground resistance is established.

What will it be most interesting for Star Wars -Fans is which Version of events that none of them are covered with a big or small screen Star Wars project before, has been depicted in Season 2.
That’s because there are two events that carry ‘Ghorman Massacre’ name in the Star Wars literature. The best known will take place two years before the battle of Yavin (2 bby), alias the battle depicted in Star Wars: Section IV: A new hope. The second, described in the now non-cannon Star Wars: Legends-Time Line, occurs in 18 bby, ie. long before the events in Andor.
For those who do not know the Ghorman massacre, I will not spoil what is happening during any of the events. But with Season 2 -Episodes 7 to 9 in 2 Bby, fans don’t have long to wait to find out which version not only serves as inspiration for the Ghorman massacre in one of 2025’s new Star Wars -tv shows, but clears up confusion about what event is actually Canon.
