ISLAMABAD:

The newly empowered Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) has set a date to take up the Arshad Sharif murder case and formally commence proceedings on the request for an independent investigation into the journalist’s killing in Kenya.

According to the FCC’s case list issued Friday, the petition will be heard on December 3.

Notices have been issued to the Attorney General, the Inspector General of Islamabad Police, the Secretary of State and others.

The hearing will take place before a two-judge bench comprising Justices Aamir Farooq and Rozi Khan Barrech. The court will focus on calls for an “independent and transparent investigation into the killing of renowned journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya”.

The high-profile case, once heard by the Supreme Court under its suo motu jurisdiction, migrated to the FCC after the 27th Amendment reshaped the judicial landscape and transferred authority over constitutional and suo motu cases to the newly minted court.
