- Qilin adds the Nissan Creative Box to his data covering site
- It claims to have taken more than 4 tb sensitive files
- It’s like stealing an invention from an inventor, scientists claim
Nissan Creative Box, the creative arm from the Japanese multinational carmaker, was hit by a ransomware attack recently and lost lots of sensitive data in the incident.
Given the nature of Creative Box’s work, the stolen data can harm the company and trick the competitive magazine, if released to nature, experts have said.
The company is a specialized satellite design studio that forms part of Nissan’s global design network. Established in 1987 to be a creative sandbox for new designers where they can create bold concepts that are usually lost from mainstream car design, it is often described as Nissan’s “design thinking” as it does not turn off large quantities of visible work but still retains a significant role in the network.
Design data, photos, videos
Now, Cygenerws Reports that the company’s name was added to Qilin’s data leakage space, suggesting it suffered a ransomware attack and a data violation. The group claims to have stolen more than 400,000 files, a total of more than 4TB.
“The 4TB data we copied include 3D design data, reports, photos, videos and various documents from Nissan cars,” the group allegedly wrote on its site.
“Although we are not yet intended to release all this data if Nissan refuses to recognize or ignore it will. At that time, everyone, including competitors, will have access to detailed data on all Nissan CBI projects,” it said.
While personally identifiable information (PII) about thousands of people is valuable to criminals interested in phishing, identity theft or thread fraud, this type of information can cause another type of pain. For Manta’s Sabeckis, Information Security Scientist at Cybergenws, the attack is “similar to stealing an invention from the inventor.”
Qilin has been among the most active ransomware groups in 2025 so far, as in the past year, Cygenerws The claims group hit nearly 500 organizations where 401 took place since January 2025.
