Bajaur imposing 12-hour, three-day curfew for targeted operation

A three-day curfew has been imposed in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwas Bajaur district with 27 areas locked in Mamund Tehsil and roads blocked for a targeted operation, authorities said on Monday.

All residents have been asked to remain indoors with the authorities warning that violation violations would be at the residents’ own risk.

The district administration said that the curfew in Mamund would remain in force from 1 p.m. 11am on August 11 to 7 p.m. 11 on August 14.

In the past, according to local sources, hundreds of families had left the area and sought security in other parts of the district and beyond.

To accommodate them, the district authorities have vacated 107 public schools and colleges to and set up a camp with 450 tents at Bajaur Sport Complex.

The district administration had also ordered the removal of corn crops planted within 100 meters from the roadside.

The farmers were given a three-day ultimatum to harvest their crops, with officials citing security concerns behind the directive.

Authorities said the measures were part of the precautionary stage that was taken when the situation remained unstable in the region.

On Friday, the seventh round of Bajaur Peace Jirga ended without a breakthrough as the negotiations hit a stalemate at a central point of contention between the two parties.

Both sides raised objections to a particular clause being discussed, resulting in a stalemate.

In a speech with the media, Peace Confirmed Jirga Member Sahibzada Haroonur Rasheed the stalemate and said, “There is effort to resolve the model. Jirga remains obliged to play his role in maintaining peace in the region”.

He urged both parties to exercise restraint and patience during the ongoing process.

“We have appealed to both sides to demonstrate tolerance. They have assured us that in the event of a conflict, civilians will not be injured,” he added.
