- Another increase in RAM prices could soon make laptops more expensive
- A report suggests that Samsung has confirmed that it will soon raise the RAM prices
- Other brands like Micron have already revealed hiking for dram and nand flash
It is likely that laptops (and other gadgets) will be more expensive due to price increases that will reportedly make memory a lot more expensive in the near future.
Seam Korean Site New Daily ReportsSamsung has apparently confirmed to partners that it raises prices (charged to device manufacturers) for both drama and NAND flash memory. This will happen in the fourth quarter of 2025, then from next month.
It’s DRAM – Standard RAM modules for PCs and laptops (and other hardware) – which we’re concerned about here, and the report says LPDDR memory will increase by 15% to 30%.
LPDDR is low-power DDR memory used in laptops and phones (as it is more effective that the name indicates) and it is LPDDR4X and 5X set to be hit with this chunky price increase (and LPDDR4 as well).
Nand-flash is used in storage, including cheap EMMC drives, often used in low cost laptops, and price increases are expected to be a somewhat less alarming 5% to 10%.
Analysis: A gloomy image to RAM
This is not very surprising to hear as we have already witnessed memory price increases this year, including reports around DDR4 RAM becomes more expensive.
This is because the DDR4 production is run (losing to DDR5 and HBM, where there must be greater profits), an instance that the new daily report refers to when it speaks of “tight delivery” due to reduced production of older memory products.
Samsung is also not alone here with Micron has already announced price increases For DRAM and NAND FLASH – allegedly to the tune to 20% to 30%, according to this report – and Sandisk too (with 10% in the latter case). So, given Samsung’s speech about up to 30% price increases in some scenarios, these are some significant hiking in theory.
LPDDR4X and LPDDR5X memory are used in a whole bunch of laptops, from previous gene models to advanced notebooks (which run LPDDR5X), and then the cost of these RAM modules that go up in a fair way will affect the expense of the materials (the total cost of producing the unit) for these laptop.
Of course, this is a price increase that will be passed on to consumers when it comes to the price of a given laptop on the shelf, and this is therefore a ominous tip that the price tags are ticking up fast enough.
Granted, perhaps not in the near future, as the price of these memory modules will only increase with effect from now (or next week) and it will take some time for it to filter through the supply and production chain. But not so long, and RAM -driven price increases for notebooks could well be in effect before Black Friday 2025 – although significant discounts will undoubtedly still be in sales (as ever).
While ram is not the most expensive component of a PC (especially not in a Gaming laptop Where the GPU commands much of the prize), it certainly has an impact — ICEM for pioneering daily driver notebooks that loads on memory. The report specifically mentions AI-PCs (Copilot+ laptops) as running the demand for high-performance RAM with low power (LPDDR5X) as well as Smartphones – Which will also see pricing.
