Beijing speed up ‘flagship’ Pakistani Dam when India stops the water Treaty

China has said it is speeding up the construction of the Mohmand Dam in Pakistan in response to India’s recent threats of cutting off water supplies, according to a report published on the South China Morning Post web site.

The dam, located in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province, has been described as a “flagship” project of Pakistani authorities and is a key component of the China-Pakistani economic corridor (CPEC) under Peking’s belt and road initiative.

According to a report from the Chinese state -TV company CCTV, concrete filling on the Mohmand damp has begun a “critical construction milestone” which signalizes an accelerated development phase.

The dam under the construction of the state -owned China Energy Engineering Corporation since 2019 was originally planned for completion in 2026.

The acceleration comes after increased tension between India and Pakistan. New Delhi has reportedly suspended the World Bank’s broken Indus Waters Treaty in response to the Pahaldam incident. In return or response, China seems to double itself on strategic infrastructure support for Islamabad.

The Mohmand Hydropower project is designed to be a multifunction facility – leveled by flood control, irrigation, power production and water supply.

When completed, it is expected to generate 800 MW electricity and give 300 million gallons per day. Day drinking water to the city of Peshawar.

Beyond Mohmand, China and Pakistan also intensify cooperation across different sectors. These include industrial development, agriculture and public welfare projects. Another major bilateral venture, the Diamer-Bhasha dam, which called the “Three Gorges project” in Pakistan, remains a gathering point for collaboration.

The Chinese announcement of quickly tracking the Mohmand Dam emphasizes growing geopolitical maneuvering in the region, where water safety emerges as a new axis of strategic influence.
