- Best Buy Marketplace sells DVD and Blu-ray discs
- Online only through third -party sellers
- Available in the app and online from today
We have said in ages reporting about the death of the movie dial is too early, and it seems that Best Buy agrees with us: It launches a new online marketplace that will sell DVDs, Blu-rays and UHD SteelBooks as part of a doubling of its online offering.
If you think, “Hold on, don’t buy Best Buy Stop selling disc -based movies by the beginning of 2024?”, You’re right: They did. With reference to the changing way we enjoy entertainment, Best Buy announced by the end of 2023 that it would stop selling DVDs and Blu rays in its stores and online after the holiday season, though it continued to sell the best 4K Blu-ray players afterwards.
So what happens? As Flatpanelshd reports, this is not a turn: you will not see that DVD or Blu-ray gangs will return to your local store. The new marketplace is online and contains third-party sellers, and these sellers will be the ones offering DVDs, Blu rays and Steelbooks.
Why the death of the disk is not inevitable
Care movies on Blu-ray is not just nostalgia. Some movies are simply not available to stream and those who do not stream the same quality as you get from the best Blu-ray editions. This is because streaming uses compressed media formats and it involves inevitable loss, something particularly visible with movies soundtracks.
There is also the ongoing concern with streaming that what is available today is not available tomorrow as licensing agreements expire or bean owners decide to cut down on the catalog. And of course, different movies are on different streamers, and with the prices of streaming services that ever rise – Apple TV+ raised its prices just last week – it means cutting down on your streaming subscriptions to lose access to a lot of movies and shows.
I’m not naive: The days of disc -based media that are the world’s favorite home entertainment option are over. But for serious movie fans – and people with serious home theater setups – it’s still a superior experience. Just ask Christopher Nolan.
