Bill to limit the marriage of children is allowed

Islamabad:

President Asif Ali Zardari signed the Islamabad Capital Territory Children’s Marriage Retention Bill in the law on Friday and set the minimum age for marriage after 18 years.

The new legislation criminalizes solemn marriages where either the boy or the girl is minor.

HRCP slams CII

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has strongly criticized CII for raising objections to the recently adopted Islamabad Capital Territory Territory Child Marriage’s Restrication Bill and called the move a serious attempt to prevent vital child protection legislation.

It expressed deep concern about CII’s attitude that challenges the bill that sets 18 years as the least legal age for marriage and criminalizes children’s marriage in the federal capital.

“The bill sets a long -standing legal standard in Pakistan and adapts to both constitutional guarantees and international human rights obligations,” HRCP said.
