- Flashpoint -Report outlines an increase in stolen credentials and data violations in 2024
- Over 3.2 billion credentials were compromised in 2024
- Profit from these attacks fuel to the cybertrussel landscape
Over 3.2 billion credentials were compromised by 2024, new research has claimed, with these details, which were then used to ‘fuel a number of illegal campaigns’.
Flashpoint’s Global Threat Intelligence Report said the figure represents a 33% increase year to year, and of these stolen credentials, an overwhelming 75% of these were obtained through information that stole malware or ‘infostealers’-which has now infected over 23 million units worldwide. The most productive of these is Redline – infects 9.9 million hosts by 2024.
Not surprisingly, 2024 saw an increase in ransomware attacks in which Flashpoint identified a 10% increase across all sectors, adding the 84% increase from the previous year – reinforcement of reports that 2024 was the worst year of ransomware on record.
An elastic market
When ransomware and info -tealer groups are disturbed, the market jumps back remarkably quickly, with new groups and malware tribes emerge – indicating a “very adaptable and elastic trussel landscape”.
This makes life much more difficult for security teams and law enforcement, so robust threat -waking up and adaptability will be the key to cyber security in the future.
An important takeaway from the report is the increase in activity in data violation, with 6,670 publicly reported data violations in 2024 – responsible for the exposure of over 16.8 billion items – to put organizations, customers and users at risk and finance cyber criminal organizations around the world.
“We live in interesting times when technology is both a blessing and a curse,” said Ian Gray, VP for intelligence on flashpoint.
