GILGIT:
Gilgit-Baltistan Inspector General of Police (IGP) Afzal Mahmood Butt has announced a major breakthrough in the investigation into the attack on Qazi Nisar Ahmad, the leader of Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ).
In a press conference, IGP Butt confirmed that significant arrests have been made in connection with the incident that took place on October 5, which resulted in injuries to six people, including senior Sunni cleric Qazi Nisar himself.
The IGP revealed that the police have successfully identified and apprehended persons directly involved in the attack as well as those who facilitated it across various stages.
Two key perpetrators involved in the physical assault have been arrested, one of whom has been identified as Naeem Abbas son of Sultan Ali, whom the IGP named as the mastermind behind the attack.
Both the main suspects arrested are said to be from the Rondu area of Skardu. According to the IGP, the full list of names of all persons involved in the attack is now known to the authorities.
The terrorists’ operation involved a total of nine people traveling in two separate vehicles: five in one car and four in the other. Police have also arrested the key facilitator who is reported to be from Jalalabad, Gilgit.
