ONE Buffy the Vampire Slayer Successor The Spinoff series is officially under development. After many years of playing with the opportunity to restart one of the best TV series of time, the series is finally on the way with a pilot ordered by Hulu – one of the best streaming services.
News about one Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Series came only in February when it was announced that the series would return after 20 years. At the time of the message, Oscar-winner ChloĆ© Zhao (Nomadland) was appointed to the show’s director, and Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker face) were advertised as authors.
The next big question was whether Slayer himself Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played the role of Buffy Summers, would return. And in short, yes, Gellar returns to Sunnydale and joins the team as a performing producer – but what about the show’s original production team?
The original show of the 90s was written and directed by Joss Whedon, who was accused by 2021 of creating a toxic working environment on the show’s set as well as its spinoff series Angel. Therefore, it is confirmed that Whedon does not return to work with the next chapter in Buffyversse. With that said, original Buffy the Vampire Slayer Manufacturers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui and Dolly Parton (yes, the Dolly Parton) returns everyone.
It’s still early days into Spinoff’s production, but we’ve had our ears to the ground when it comes to all the recent updates on the show. Here is all we know about the next chapter of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Full spoilers follow for Buffy the Vampire Slayer Seasons 1-7.
Drop dates speculation
Although the pilot is currently in early stages of production and a new lead slayer has been cast, an accurate release date has not yet been determined. According to IMDB, it is invoiced to be released next year, but again there is another official message made – so we would not exclude 2027.
Predicted role crew
In addition to stepping into the shoes from the executive producer, Sarah Michelle Gellar will also reprise her role as Buffy Summers. But this time Buffy won’t be in the middle of the reboot. Instead, Buffy will be a recurring character and a brand new Slayer will be in focus – and she has been found.
Back in May, it was revealed that young actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong would take on the lead role in the successor series. Gellar told the news that Armstrong himself shared the message via an Instagram wheel, where she said ‘Welcome to the New Sunnydale’ – a possible nod on the show’s title maybe?
Before he scored the role when this generation’s next Slayer, Armstrong started his career in productions from some of the best streaming services including the Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton -crewand Netflix’s Anne with an e.
So far, Armstrong and Gellar are the only names associated with the spinoff’s confirmed role crew. But while we are still waiting for more names to surface, Gellar has expressed his desire to bring characters back from Buffy’s previous sharing with Vanity Fair Italia “My dream is to bring everyone who has died, but the space must also be made into new stories”.
If Gellar’s dream comes to execution, there is an endless number of characters from Buffy’s past that could resurrect, but fandom will definitely have his favorites – Joyce Summers is one of the front trunners who died in season five.
Other names that could grow up varies from Jenny Calendar, who suffered a heart shot death in the hands of Angel in season two, Tara, shot in front of her lover Willow in season six, and even Anya, who died in the last moments of the final episode. But as exciting as this may sound, it has not been confirmed.
Plot rumors

Similar to its release date, we are not quite sure which direction the show will take plot, but restart has been described as ‘the next chapter in Buffyverse’, says Deadline. In addition, Sarah Michelle Gellar also revealed to Vanity Fair that the restart “will be lighter than the last few seasons of the original”, which adds “We will try to find a balance between new and old characters”.
Still, it doesn’t reveal much about which direction the restart will go plot. To say that, TV line shared details of a possible plot overview that we take with a pinch of salt for now.
According to sales, the new Slayer will lean more into the properties of Willow, Buffy’s cloud, but intellectual sidekick with an ability to witchcraft rather than the match, Kick-Ass Buffy-Esque Persona. TV Line also said the new Slayer could be named Nova, though it admits that this could very much be a placeholder name until more details are revealed.
Another speculation is around the new Slayer’s Group of Friends, which TV Line says could repeat a similar like ‘Scooby Gang’ from the original series consisting of Buffy, Xander, Willow, Buffy’s Watcher Giles and other recurring characters depending on the season. TV Line says the new ‘scoobies’ will be ‘Hugo, an out-and-proud Nerd coming from money, and Gracie, a young expert on vampires who is an acolyte of Gellars Buffy’.
Alternatively, there is another direction that the action could take. Despite the fact that the golden rule that there was only one killer at a time, Hulu -restart could turn this upside down and explore the possibilities of more killings – just as its season seven finals did. But this is simply a personal hypothesis.
