- Teenage Engineering has produced a new PC case
- Computer-2 is a sequel to the computer-1 but it is free
- It’s made of plastic rather than aluminum, and unfortunately out of stock right now
Are you thinking of building a new computer? What if I told you that you could get the PC case for free – you probably wouldn’t believe me would you? Well, you can – with a few notable warnings, but this is still basically a freebie.
The Verge reports that Teenage Engineering (more typically associated with Nifty Audio-hardware) now has a sequel to his computer-1 PC case. Can you guess what it’s called? Jepp: Computer -2 case -in a fantastic stroke of creativity.
The most important difference is that the follow -up as opposed to the original case that costs $ 149 in the US is free. Another notable change is that instead of aluminum it is made of plastic, which is obviously a cost -saving measure.
In fact, it is a single sheet of semi-transparent plastic that is folded into a PC chassis (using hinges and snap hooks). There are no necessary screws and the motherboard can simply be pushed and clicked into place, informing the Teenage Engineering us.
It must be a (small) mini-itx motherboard, mind, as this is a small form factor (SFF) case for a compact PC-BUILD. It can fit an SFX power supply and a double-slot graphics card (7 inches is the maximum length of the discreet GPU).
In addition to the plastic sheet that forms the chassis itself, you get the bites and pieces to go with it with regard to different power cables, fasteners, feet for the case to stand on, etc.
Analysis: What about these catches?
Okay, so returning to costs is a – literally – round figure of nothing – how on earth can this PC case be delivered for free? It can’t, and Teenage Engineering charges for the shipment to cover sending computer-2 as you might guess (and probably a little of it is to cover the production costs). Of course, it’s fair enough – that means you get the components yourself for free.
The second catch is that computer-2 is already marked as sold out on the official site; You can only click to receive a review when stock is back in. However, you can still examine the instructions for a better understanding of what construction involves and exactly what you get.
In any case, the computer -1 is a fantastic case for a small PCBuild -and this new plastic on the formula looks just as cool, especially considering the price here (or lack of it). Anecdotally, I have seen a report on the shipment that costs $ 16 (in the US) if you are wondering exactly what you might end up paying (when it is back in stock).
As for mulling over buying a cheap case in general, you can get some good products in the budget market. Just be careful about airflow problems – especially if it’s a game -PC that you build – and be sure to consult reviews to make sure you don’t pick up a dud (and also our best PC case that buys guide comes well).
