Karachi:
It was like striking gold when a company that demanded for fresh water spuded a gas reserve.
TPL properties have reported the discovery of a gas pocket while drilling a test well for water exploration in Korangi Creek.
Fine a message submitted to Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the company said that preliminary technical assessments, along with independent evaluations from industrial experts, suggest that the gas is probably low biogenic methane – naturally produced through the degradation of organic matter.
Since the location is not part of a recognized natural gas reservoir, the company noted that the gas pocket is expected to spread naturally over time if the fire is allowed to burn. The discovery was made as part of a number of comprehensive studies conducted in collaboration with leading national and international consulting firms. These studies included geotechnical analyzes, soil structure and pollution assessments, electrical resistivity studies, a comprehensive environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) and other baseline evaluations.
After the incident on the night of Friday, March 28, 2025, TPL properties have taken all necessary measures to manage the situation and have informed the relevant stakeholders accordingly.
Large reserves in Korangi Creek
Previously, a geologist who spoke with Express Pakinomist had expressed the possibility of large underground gas reserves in the Korangi Creek area and called for the need to extinguish the fire that has been burning for five days and initiated gas research activities on site.
Associate Professor at the University of Karachis Department of Geology, Dr. Adnan Khan, The Express Pakinomist told that 56-year-old data from Wells, which were drilled in the Indus-Delta region of oil and gas exploration, points to the potential presence of methane gas in the place where watercills led to gas emission and outbreak of fire. He added that there is also an option for coal deposits on site.
