- Data continues to return to Chinese servers, even with telemetry from
- Hardware and OS -Specifications, MUS/Keyboard activity and more
- TRAE -Memory use is 3x higher than the cursor
A developer has taken to Github to warn that Bytedance’s Trae Ai-driven idea has collected data from users and sent them to the Chinese company’s servers.
A report found that extensive network activity continues despite the fact that users disabled telemetry in settings, with approx. 500 network calls observed in seven minutes corresponding to approx. 26 MB of data transferred.
The data was directed to bytedance -servers at ByteoverSea[.]Com domain, with a wide range of system and project information that is potentially at risk of being collected by the company.
Bytedance’s Trae Ide could collect data
According to the report, Bytedance collected system information such as hardware specifications and OS details, usage patterns, performance metrics, project and file details, unique sustained identifiers and mouse/keyboard activity, among some other elements.
The developer, also found bytance, has the potential to activate/disable function or change the functionality externally without pushing updates.
Trae, which is marketed as a free alternative to as the cursor, uses GPT-4O and Claude-3.5-SONNET to help users increase productivity, but the app turned out to use about three times as much memory as a marker (and 6.3x vs code).
The largest Center for Privacy and Security Center and Data Sleverignity, with large alarm bells ringing around byte dance’s continuous collection of information, even after users change their preferences. The developer was also concerned about the amount of unnecessary system information collected in these logs and the fact that it was all sent to Chinese infrastructure.
Bytedance customers also share transparency concerns, as Ide fails to properly pass on the data collected and the telemetry shift seems to be non-functional.
Techradar Pro have asked bytance to respond to these accusations, but we did not receive an immediate answer.
