Sophomore Clara Adams from North Salina’s High School finished in second place in Prelims and quickly got out of the starting line in the final and ran to a first place, or that’s how she thought.

Adams celebrated with his father after winning the race. She took a fire extinguisher from her father and sprayed her shoes with it, pointing out she was on fire, the Monterey Herald reported. Clara’s father, David, said the celebration was done away from opponents.

“She didn’t respect anyone,” he told the business.

California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) decided that Adams ‘party was unsportsmanlike, and Adams’ state championship was taken away. She was also disqualified from the meeting and lost an opportunity to also compete in the 200 meters race.

David Adams told the outlets that the CIF’s decision was protested and said he felt the disqualification was “racing motivated.” Clara Adams is black.

The decision was maintained.

“It’s a very unfortunate event,” Alan Green told the Monterey Herald. “We are all hearted. Clara ran an incredibly 400 race and is the fastest 400 -meter girl in the state.

“She tried to have fun at the finish line after 400. It was interpreted as unsportsmanlike. What an incredible season and running. It’s unfortunate.”

Clara Adams said afterwards she felt she was “robbed” and was “in shock.”

Pakinomist Digital reached out to CIF for comment.

Adams finished in first place in the 400-meter line at the Central Coast Section Championships and first finished in three races at the Pacific Coast Athletic League Masters meet last month.
