Camel breeding can drive livestock growth, says officials

Multan:

Camel milk, known for its rich nutrient profile and medical properties, has the potential to improve public health and significantly increase Pakistan’s livestock exports, experts say.

In a speech at World Camel Day, observed annually on June 22, Dr. Jamshaid Akhtar, Deputy Director of Pets, the unused potential for camels in Pakistan’s semi-dry and dry regions.

He noted that camel milk contains insulin -like proteins, making it particularly advantageous for diabetic patients.

“Camel milk is a powerful natural remedy. It not only helps control diabetes, but is increasingly in demand in the cosmetics industry because of its natural healing and moisturizing properties,” he said.

World Camel Day is celebrated on June 22 to raise awareness of the important role of camels playing in desert ecosystems.

“This date was selected symbolically as it marks the hottest and longest day of the year – a reminder of the camel’s unmatched ability to survive extreme conditions,” Dr. Jamshaid.

“Camels are not just animals in the desert; they are lifelines in hard climate.”

Pakistan, he added, is home to some of the world’s best camel racers that are well adapted to local environmental conditions. He urged livestock farmers to explore camel breeding more seriously and consider the financial value of camel -based products such as milk, meat and even bones.

“Increased production and value added in camel products can help Pakistan earn significant currency,” he said.

“By promoting camel products both locally and internationally, we can separate a unique identity for our country in the global livestock sector.”

Dr. Jamshaid also emphasized the cultural and ecological significance of camels that have historically served society through transport, food and resistance to climate adversity.

He urged local farmers to introduce scientific methods for effective camel breeding and noted that modern practices could dramatically improve productivity.

“It’s time we move our perspective and recognize camels as a sustainable source of livelihood and a pillar of national economic growth,” he concluded.
