Protesters who demonstrated against controversial six-channel project on Tuesday stormed and set fire to the residence of Sindh-Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar in Naushahro Feroze district, which vandalized property and torches household articles.
The protesters stormed the minister’s residence, located in Moro City near National Highway, vandalized the property and set household content on fire. They also burned two trailers parked nearby.
The question of Cholistan Canals was as an important point in violation between Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) -LED SINDH government and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led government at the center.
The federal government had planned to construct six channels on the river Indus to irritate the Cholistan Desert -a project rejected by its most important Allied PPP and other Sindh -nationalist parties.
According to government sources, the estimated costs of the cholistan channel and system RS211.4 billion are, and through the project, thousands of hectares of barren land can be used for agricultural purposes, and 400,000 hectares of land can be brought during cultivation.
Almost all political and religious parties, nationalist groups and civil society organizations together with lawyers staged events and sit-ins over Sindh towards the controversial level.
Last month, however, the project was rejected by the Council for Common Interest (CCI), which overturned the Executive Committee for the National Economic Councils (ECNEC) decision made on 7 February.
“No new channels will be constructed without mutual understanding and consensus among all provinces … Center will not move forward with any plans until a comprehensive agreement is obtained between the provinces,” said a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office after the very important CCI meeting.
Despite the CCI’s decision, protests against the project continued over Sindh, where the government called on the protesters to quit them.
Clashes broke out between police and protesters today as law enforcement tried to spread the crowd by means of relay accusations.
Protesters reciprocated with stone pelvis, resulting in damage to a station house officer (SHO) and two policemen. Meanwhile, five protesters were also injured during the clash. All the wounded were moved to a nearby hospital.
According to police, the protesters have now been spread.
Meanwhile, Lanjar noted the incident and sought a detailed report from SSP Naushahro Feroze. He ordered strict action against those who “challenged the state’s writing”.
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) President Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has also strongly condemned the attack on Zia’s residence and called it a “terrorist act.”
He said that those who exploited the cover of protest to spread violence had postponed their malicious intentions and urged strict action against those responsible for disturbing public order.
