Cancer patients to get immediate biopsy reports

Karachi:

For the first time in Pakistan, immediate biopsy reports of suspicion of cancer patients will be possible at a government hospital. According to the development projects for the coming fiscal year, Jinnah introduces Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) a Confocal immediate digital pathology system, enabling real -time detection of the nature of the tumor and spread during surgery.

Suspected cancer patients will now receive immediate biopsy reports, even in government hospitals. JPMC is set to become Pakistan’s first public hospital to implement the confocal immediate digital pathology system, allowing surgeons to determine the tumor type and scope in real time during operations.

Professor Shahid Rasool, CEO of Jinnah Hospital Karachi, stated that the technology was previously only available in private hospitals. However, it will now be installed at Jinnah Hospital with the support of the Sindh Health Department under the Sindh Government’s annual development program.

He said the technology treats tests and creates slides during surgery, allowing immediate provision whether a tumor is present and, if so, how far it has spread. Patients no longer have to wait 14 to 15 days on biopsy results.

Two advanced devices will be purchased at a price of RS366 million. A device will be installed in the surgical complex that benefits general surgery, orthopedia, thorax and ENT departments, while the other device will be created in the gynecology department.

The purpose of the project is not only to increase biopsy’s speed and accuracy, but also to reduce the time patients remain under anesthesia. Current methods, such as frozen section and core biopsies, take longer to produce reports that can jeopardize patients’ lives.

The project also includes training for medical staff and improving technical expertise together with the purchase of modern machines.

The hospital’s officials said this system will be particularly advantageous for poor and middle -class patients who cannot afford expensive treatments in private hospitals.
