- Canon Racked to reintroduce the compact camera game with New Powershot V1
- MESSAGE OF NEW CAMAMER that has been tipped for March / April
- The latest Viral Model Powershot G7 X Mark III could be interrupted
Point-and-shoot digital cameras making comeback were not on my bingo card from 2024-trodes all killed smartphones pretty much that market many years ago. However, several models became viral last year, no more than 2019’s Canon Powershot G7 x Mark III, so it seems that there is life in the pocket -snapper yet.
I am all for that, but as I previously wrote about points-and-shoots for 2025, there are no leading brands that actually make new models, and therefore they are left to buy to choose between the models several years old , increasingly used. It’s fine in a way quality of popular and well-known cameras from years back still endure today. But let’s be honest, new technology would also be very welcome.
Now it seems that Canon will be the first of the big names to step up and resume to make new points-and-shoots with meaningful upgrades after cannon rooms sent a few stories with a good bit of info about what it says, is an upcoming new PowerShot V1. It tipes to be announced sometime between March and May this year with fairly exciting specifications and an estimated price of $ 600-800 (about £ 650-850).
What is expected to happen at the same time is the discontinuation of the popular G7 x Mark III, and if that is the case, should Canon be all-in with a new and improved PowerShot Compact and otherwise discard a winning horse? Here is what is said and why cannon that resumes compact cameras makes sense.
A new dawn for powershot?
It seems that Canon is set to start again with its PowerShot Compressations, where the G-Series nomenclature ditches g-series to make PowerShot V-Series models. It already launched the PowerShot V10 VLOGGING camera in May 2023 and showed two PowerShot concepts: a 360-degree camera and a 180-degree camera with VR capacities. However, a new Powershot V1 will be a proper point-and-shoot for photographers, and I expected it would get the most interest in everyone, especially if rumors of its specifications and price turn out to be on the money.
Highlighting features allegedly include a cannon-made 24MP CMOS sensor of a size ‘close to micro four-thirds,’ and a 3x optical zoom lens (16-50 mm approx.). It probably shoots 4K video with a slight crop and includes Canon’s C-Log3 and HDR PQ color profiles. In addition, it may contain a standard 3-inch screen, although it is not clear whether this is a firm, vipping or vari-angular screen. There is also no proper word about the rumored V1’s design, but Mockups suggests a camera similar to the G7 X III.
Much of these key specifications match certain existing PowerShot G-Series cameras. So will this just feel like a waiver that Panasonic did with the recent Lumix ZS99 / TZ99? I hope not, and that Canon will also put newly developed features from its mirror -free cameras in V1, such as its latest autofocus system.
However, what is most exciting of all is the prospect of Canon launching a new compact camera that is easily accessible to buy at a very reasonable price. There are simply not many high quality options available today for the $ 600-800 mark. Sprinkle a few new features and I expect PowerShot V1 to be one of 2025’s most popular cameras.
There are even some suggestions that Canon could jump a surprise or two on CP+ in Tokyo at the end of February – maybe PowerShot V1 be the star of the show?
